June 27 2008 celbrated the 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela and the start of the sixth term of Robert Mugabe. Each of these men led their countries to freedom. Nelson Mandela was elected president and retired from leadership after two terms in office. Robert Mugabe has employed violence and intimidation to retained his power at all costs. The results are compelling. Zimbabwe has gone from the jewel of the region to one of the poorest countries in the world while South Africa has risen to a position of regional leadership.
Robert Mugabe in 2008: “We are not going to give up our country because of a mere X. How can a ballpoint fight with a gun?”
Nelson Mandela in 1964: "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die"
